Full Metal Alchemist

Fullmetal Alchemist (鋼の錬金術師 Hagane no Renkinjutsushi, lit. "Alchemist of Steel"), commonly abbreviated as FMA or Hagaren, is an ongoing Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Hiromu Arakawa. The world of Fullmetal Alchemist is styled after Industrial Revolution Europe and several experiences from the author's life.[1] Set in a fictional universe in which alchemy is one of the most advanced scientific techniques known to man, the story follows Edward and Alphonse Elric, two alchemist brothers, who want to recover parts of their bodies lost in an attempt to bring their mother back to life through alchemy.

The manga is serialized in Square Enix's Monthly Shōnen Gangan magazine and was adapted into an animated television series and a movie sequel. The manga is still running in Japan, and twenty bound volumes have been released so far, while sixteen have been released in the United States by Viz Media. The first TV series has been completed, and consists of fifty-one episodes and a full-length movie sequel, all of which have been released in English in all English-speaking DVD regions. A new TV series was recently announced. In addition, there are several spin-off novels, original video animations (OVAs), and video games. Collectible card games, action figures, soundtracks, and supplementary books, have also been released.

The franchise has seen high popularity in both Japan and North America. As of March 2008, the Fullmetal Alchemist manga has sold over 30 million volumes in Japan. The English release of the manga's first volume was the top-selling graphic novel during the year 2005. The series' animated adaptation won the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize in 2003. In two TV Asahi web polls, the anime was voted #1 most popular anime of all time in Japan. It was nominated in six of the eight categories for which it was eligible at the American Anime Awards in February 2007, winning awards in five of them.

The series starts off with this episode though in respect to the time line, the events take place after Episode 9 (Episodes 3 to 9 are flashbacks). It starts off with a mini-flash back to when Ed and Al are boys and attempt the forbidden human transmutation then switches to current after the opening song.

Edward Elric (Ed) and Alphonse Elric (Al) make their way to Lior to investigate reports of a Philosopher's Stone. There they get to hear of a Father Cornello who is said to be able to perform miracles. The people of Lior insist that Father Cornello would be able to help them and Rose volunteers to take them to see the priest. Conversation between Rose and Father Cornello reveals that the priest has promised to resurrect Rose’s dead boyfriend as a miracle in return for her hard work. Ed and Al attend a ‘Miracle Gathering’ where the Elric brothers realize the ‘miracles’ are nothing more than alchemy and the priest is ignoring the laws of alchemy.

Upon hearing of the presence of Edward Elric, the Full Metal Alchemist and wrongly perceiving a threat; Father Cornello authorizes for them to be removed. The priest is later shown to be talking to Lust, though nothing is explained.

Edward meanwhile tries to convince Rose of the priests scam and tries to force his views on alchemy and science and disbelief in miracles upon her. Just then a follower of Father Cornello shoots Al with a gun and the suit of armor is revealed to be hollow – showing that Al has no body, which Al terms as his ‘punishment for setting foot on holy ground where mortals are forbidden’.

Rose believes them to be evil and runs off in panic leading them to Father Cornello. There Edward realizes that the priest has a Philosophers stone and hence he performs alchemy without a transmutation circle and ignores the laws of equivalent exchange.

A dialogue takes place where the priest tries to show he has done nothing but good for Lior and that Edward only wants the stone for personal reasons. The priest sets Chimera’s to attack upon them where it is revealed Edward can perform alchemy without a transmutation circle and his right arm and left leg are mechanical. The priest rightly guesses that the brothers attempted human transmutation, hence their appearance.

Continuation of episode one: The forbidden alchemy of attempting to bring their mom back from the dead caused the Elric brothers; Edward to lose his limbs and Al his body. They need the stone to fix their bodies to the way they were before. They then manage to escape on being cornered.

Father Cornello shows a shadowy figure, hidden behind drapes, assumed to be Rose’s resurrected boyfriend as a reward for her faith from the sun god; though she is not allowed to see him as ‘his body is not complete yet’. The followers of the priest then broadcast across Lior about the Elric brothers and how they are ‘disbelievers’ and tried to take the life of Father Cornello, leading the town to turn against them. Confrontation between the people of Lior and Edward happens, where Rose then dramatically announces that her dead boyfriend has been brought to life and that Edward is a liar. The sun god statues come to life and start hitting Ed and Al.

Ed is captured, taken to the priest, his pocket watch taken and imprisoned. The next day Al, completely undamaged is shown to be sneaking off with a bell. Lust appears in the priests’ room and warns him to keep the real reason behind the Philosophers stone a secret. Rose, hesitant now of the priest, sneaks in and discovers that her boyfriend has not been brought to life. The figure is similar to a badly formed large bird and can only mimic human sounds. Father Cornello then leaves it to attack Rose, and goes off to ‘take care’ of Edward. Al then comes to save Rose. In his prison Edward manages to make the priest confess everything about how he thinks the people of Lior are ‘mindless pawns’, Ed then reveals a hidden microphone broadcasting everything the priest has said to the people of Lior. Ed then tells the priest that Al is alive and well and the metal form they beat up was not him.

The priest runs outside where he sees the people of Lior have gathered and are frantically questioning him. In order to save himself he makes the sun god statues move and brands it as a ‘miracle’. Edward then extremely irritated, uses alchemy to move the largest statue of the sun god. This display of Ed’s alchemic power stuns the priest. Father Cornello attempts to use the Philosophers stone which then bursts and disfigures his arm, revealing the stone to be a fake. The disappointed brothers realize they will have to start searching again.

Rose then confronts Edward who replies to her angry outburst by telling her to ‘Walk on your own and move forward’. Lust then reveals to Father Cornello that the whole town was ‘juicy bait’ to the real stone seekers. Gluttony then eats the preacher up and Envy is forced to take the priests form to convince the people with one more ‘miracle’. While the people rejoice Rose is left conflicted.

A flashback then starts, with Al’s voice trying to tell Rose about themselves and their years of searching.

Ed and Al are in a library trying to find more leads, now that they discovered Cornello’s stone was a fake. Al then chances upon an ‘Introduction to Alchemy’ and the flashback occurs.

It shows the boys as kids trying to make a present for Winry Rockbell using alchemy. The process scares her and she cries. Trisha Elric (their mother) along with Winry’s parents and grandmother try to calm her down. On the way home, she asks her sons about Alchemy and gets surprised by how easily they understand it. She credits it to their father, hinting at him being a great alchemist and then says she is proud of their alchemy. The brothers then start competing with each other for her attention. Later, Ed is revealed to be angry at their father for leaving them, though he barely remembers him. At Winry’s house they learn both her parents (surgeons) have been killed in the Ishval war due to a surprise attack.

A while later where the boys are shown to be a little more grown up, they arrive home to find their mother unconscious and gravely ill. Believing that their fathers presence will make her feel better they write letters to all acquaintances hoping for a response. Their mothers dies, and her last words make them realize that alchemy made her smile only because it reminded her of their father. Unable to think of living without her, they decide to bring her back to life using human transmutation even though it is forbidden. They find themselves a teacher and learn alchemy seriously from page one.

Months pass, then the brothers are shown attempting to bring their mother back to life. The process goes horribly wrong, the thing they brought back to life was not human, Ed loses his left leg and Al disappears. In panic Ed sacrifices his right arm to bind his brothers’ soul to a suit of armor.

Al then takes his brother to the Rockbell’s house. Over there Lt. Col. Roy Mustang arrives in response to one of their letters and expresses a keen interest in Edward owing to the fact that he can perform human alchemy and survive. A seemingly unconscious Ed hears this and later decides to become a State Alchemist due to the amount of resources available, even though he would become a ‘dog of the military’ forced to do what the state commands. He considers it his responsibility to fix his brother and asks the Rockbells to fix him with automail.

A year passes with the surgery and rehabilitation. They decide to leave to meet Roy Mustang and for Edward to try being a state alchemist. The brothers burn down the family home on the day they leave, deciding to leave no traces and this act forces them to move forward, unable to turn back.
04 "A Forger's Love"
"Ai no Rensei" (愛の錬成)
2003-10-25 2004-11-27

On the way to meet Lt. Col. Roy Mustang, while waiting for the next train they apprehend a thief and learn from a cop about an alchemist named Majhal and ‘murderous zombies’ have been terrorizing the village. Edward expresses his keenness to meet Majhal, because that name frequently appeared in their father's correspondences.

They reach the village, get scared by sudden fireworks and get ‘welcomed’ by the village children (which involves bullying). Majhal arrives and uses alchemy to fix a broken statue leading the Elric brothers to guess who he is. At his house, Majhal seems to know about Al’s soul attachment and thinks Edward has inherited his fathers’ talent for alchemy.

One of the village children, a girl named Claus comes by, forced to apologize to the brothers. There she declares she isn’t sorry and that her sister was killed by a dead girl. After this outburst she runs away, the brothers follow and save her by alchemy when she trips and rolls down a hill. She then explains how at her sisters funeral, she and her father saw the form of a dead girl, Karin. After hearing Ed’s refusal to help she runs away in anger.

At Majhals’ place they hear more about Karin, a woman who died 20 years ago. He explains that she was a florist and had cultivated the rare ‘blue rose’. On her way to deliver blue roses to a town, her horse and carriage fall down the cliff leading people to believe her to be dead. Majhal finds it impossible that a kind person such as Karin would hurt anyone.

Edward finds it all a little suspicious and believes human alchemy at work, and suspects Majhal. While walking through the cemetery they fall into a trap made by Claus and her friends for Karin. Karin’s form appears and Majhal destroys it with fire. Lust is then seen to be observing from the woods, disappointed with Majhals lack of alchemic talent she walks off.

The villagers start celebrating believing Majhal has saved them. Even more suspicious, Edward starts snooping around Majhals house where he runs into a middle-aged woman, a friend of Majhal, she warns that he would be angry at them for snooping. Due to some alchemy, Ed feels dizzy and falls on a wall which reveals a hidden stairway. He falls to the bottom, notices dolls looking like Karin and blanks out. When Ed comes to, he and Al are bound together in chains where Majhal reveals the dolls to be canvases for ‘Karin’s soul’, some escape and fuel superstition in the village, he explains how he loved Karin and even if he could not have her, at least dolls that resembled her beauty, and hence this mad scheme.

He has kept Ed in chains to learn more about soul-attachment; Claus then arrives, interrupting his speech, to thank him. He knocks her unconscious, and hits his middle-aged-woman friend, and leaved. Upon him leaving, Al breaks the chains and Ed discovers a rare blue rose petal on the woman. The Elric brothers barge in with the woman to see Majhal trying to use alchemy on Claus. Edward tells him that nothing he knows is the truth; Karin never died, she hit her head, lost her memory and started a new life, 20 years later she remembered everything and in a gesture of true love returned to Majhal, who failed to recognize her in her current middle-aged woman state. Edward makes the revelation that Majhals friend, the same woman is Karin. Majhal gets angry; a fight occurs and by accident gets stabbed by his own sword. Even when dying he refuses to acknowledge the truth, fixated by Karin’s youthful beauty, he dies believing himself to be right. A distraught Karin is forced to acknowledge his shallowness.

As the brother leave town, a now more sober and gentle Claus, thanks them.
05 "The Man with the Mechanical Arm"
"Shissō! Ōtomeiru" (疾走!機械鎧)
2003-11-01 2004-12-04

At the train station, Edward calls Roy Mustang to inform about their expected arrival at Central. On hearing of there being an earlier train, he decides to test their luck and orders the brothers to ‘get on it or go home’, forcing the brothers to run towards the train. It is revealed a military General Hakuro is onboard the train, taking a family vacation. Hughes is shown to be tying up the military line talking nonsensical to Mustang; waiting for confirmation the line isn’t being tapped.

Falman panics at the appearance of Al in a suit of armor, however through Hughes who conveys the message to Mustang, he learns that it’s ‘okay’. On going to check on Edward, Falman gets attacked by two bandits. In other places, the bandits take charge of the train, holding the General and the train passenger’s hostage. The bandits are revealed to working for the ‘People's Eastern Revolution Front’, headed by a man called ‘Bald’ who has a mechanical arm. They want their captured leader to be traded for the General and the train passengers. Two of the bandits approach Al, due to his appearance. The brothers overpower them and decide to handle the situation. They manage to overpower all the extremists with a little help from Hughes and Ed is forced to battle Bald, the one with an auto-mail arm that looks like a gun. Ed destroys his arm and Al beat him up.

At Central station, Bald on seeing Mustang tries to attack him, but is burnt by Roy’s flame attack, he then reveals himself to be the Flame Alchemist. Ed furious, rightly guesses the reasons for being forced to take the earlier train as Mustang knew what would happen. To his surprise he learns that due to him helping and handling the situation, an exception has been made and he can now take the alchemy exam to be a state alchemist. Ed, unaware that under normal circumstances he wouldn’t be allowed to take the exam, then realizes he has been ‘played’ but has gained something out of it.

The episode ends with them being thanked by a little girl they saved on the train.

The movie's story is set two years after the events of the TV series's last episode. Edward Elric now lives in Munich, Germany, in the year 1923. Stripped of his alchemical powers, he has been researching rocketry all this time together with Alfons Heiderich, a young man who resembles his own brother.

In this world parallel to his, Edward encounters some people besides Alfons whose faces are familiar to him. After lending a hand to a troubled gypsy girl, Edward is thrown in a series of events that can open him a path to return to his homeworld, where Alphonse Elric ventures deeper into the mysteries of alchemy in search of a way to reunite with his older brother, but that also can have serious consequences.
